About us
Built Around the Belief That Home Matters
Birchwood Rest was founded with a single purpose: to offer Toronto's seniors a boarding home that genuinely feels like one.
Back to HomeOur story
A Family Home Opened to the Community
Birchwood Rest began in 2009 when the Ellsworth family converted their long-standing Rosedale residence into a shared home for seniors seeking comfortable, non-clinical accommodation. The idea was straightforward: offer exactly what a thoughtful family home provides β warm meals, tidy rooms, genuine conversation, and daily structure β to those who could benefit from it.
Over the years, the home has welcomed residents from across Ontario and beyond, many of whom stayed for years and described Birchwood Rest as the most settled they had felt since living independently. That feedback has shaped every decision we have made about how the home operates today.
We are not affiliated with any healthcare network or institutional system. We operate as an independent residential home, which means our priorities are set by the residents and their families β not by external policy. That independence allows us to be responsive, personal, and genuinely attentive to what each person needs.

What guides us
Our Mission & Values
Dignity in Daily Life
Every resident is treated as a full and capable adult. We listen, adapt, and respect each person's preferences β rather than fitting people into a fixed routine.
Community Over Isolation
Loneliness can quietly diminish wellbeing. We build a social environment through shared meals, activities, and genuine conversation so residents feel part of something warm.
Honest Transparency
Families trust us with someone they love. We keep communication open and clear β no surprises about what is included, what we can offer, and what falls outside our scope.
The people behind the home
Meet the Team
A small, stable team who genuinely enjoy their work and take the time to know each resident as an individual.
Margaret Ellsworth
Founder & House Manager
Margaret opened Birchwood Rest after years of caring for her own elderly relatives and recognising how few genuinely homelike options existed. She oversees daily operations and is often the first face new residents meet.
David Okonkwo
Activity Coordinator
David designs and leads the Social Engagement Program, tailoring activities to resident interests each week. He holds a diploma in Recreation & Leisure Services and has worked in community settings for over eight years.
Sophie LarivΓ©e
Resident Liaison & Concierge Lead
Sophie is the dedicated point-of-contact for residents in the Full Concierge Living tier. Her background is in hospitality management, and she brings that same attention to detail and genuine care to her work each day.
How we operate
Our Standards & Commitments
We hold ourselves to standards that matter to our residents and their families, even when they are not formally required of a non-medical boarding home.
Cleanliness & Maintenance
Common areas are cleaned daily. Rooms receive a full housekeeping service each week. Maintenance issues are addressed within 48 hours, often sooner.
Fire Safety & Emergency Protocols
The home is equipped with current smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and exit signage. All staff receive regular safety training and we conduct fire drills twice yearly.
Food Handling & Nutrition
Meals are prepared in a kitchen that meets Ontario food handling standards. We work with a nutritional consultant to ensure menus are balanced and varied week to week.
Privacy & Personal Space
We respect residents' personal space and privacy absolutely. Staff do not enter rooms without knocking, and personal belongings are handled with full discretion.
Staff Screening
All members of our team undergo background checks and vulnerable sector screening before joining Birchwood Rest. References are thoroughly verified.
Family Communication
We maintain an open-door policy for family members. Monthly check-in conversations with family contacts are offered for all residents, and we welcome questions at any time.
Birchwood Rest in context
Senior Residential Boarding in Toronto's Rosedale Valley
Non-medical residential boarding for seniors occupies a distinct space in Toronto's housing landscape. It sits between independent apartment living and licensed retirement or long-term care facilities β offering structured daily support without clinical procedures, nursing care, or medical interventions.
Birchwood Rest serves seniors who are largely independent in their daily functioning but who benefit from a structured environment with regular meals, housekeeping support, and social opportunity. Many of our residents come to us after a spouse has passed, after a period of isolation in a private home, or when managing a large household alone has simply become more than feels reasonable.
Our location at 47 Rosedale Valley Road places us within a quiet, tree-lined neighbourhood close to ravine trails, parks, transit connections along Bloor Street, and a range of local services. The setting contributes meaningfully to the quality of daily life here β and supports the kind of gentle outings and fresh air that our activity programming regularly incorporates.
We are committed to transparency about what Birchwood Rest is and what it is not. We do not provide nursing care, personal support worker services, or medication management. Seniors with significant medical or mobility needs may find that a licensed care facility better suits their situation, and we are always candid about that if it comes up during an enquiry conversation.
